The restoration intervention for didactic-informative purposes with multisensory paths on the building “Molino di Mezzo” allowed HMID to fully express its vocation. This restoration was promoted by the municipal administration of Spilimbergo, the Ecomuseum of the Friulan Dolomites Lis Aganis and the High School Tagliamento.
The mill with three millstones started in 1391, by means of the stream Roggia, was remodeled after the earthquake of the 1500s and the 700s and assumed the present two-story configuration after the handover among various owners , until it stopped its activity in 1995 with the Gridello family.
The three external wooden wheels with their transmission shafts replaced with a single wheel and an iron shaft, milled corn, barley, oats, wheat and beat the cod for the local Osteria al Bachero. Instead of the ancient external doors, fixed frames have been positioned in order to create illuminated display cases, reproducing thanks to the window stickers, the innovative logo of the “Molino di Mezzo”.
From the repaired outdoor courtyard, converted into a reception, you arrive to the entrance, used as a bookshop, wardrobe and suitably closed with panels. On the first floor there is a taxidermic collection separated from the staircase with motifs recalling the exhibition itself.
In the northern room a path has been created with the new logo as a leitmotif, the traditional oratory of the mills and some historical photographs enlarged and framed by high-impact frames, illuminated display cases containing the different ground seeds and tables designed to accommodate the material in the exhibition.
On the second floor, furniture made with poor materials that are faithful to the original style of the mill, recovers the prevailing rigor and frugality of a miller (who even worked fifteen hours a day) covered with flour. The containers have become boards to support the paintings of students visiting and the southern multimedia hall, if necessary, can be converted into an auditorium.
In the engine room, a glass-metal parapet is installed to secure the ditch and the millstone platform and a linear LED system illuminates the machinery.
The renovation concerned an apartment located in the historical center of Udine, which was built towards the end of the fifties and was never renovated. The planimetric situation was characterized by thick and clear divisions of the spaces, which made each room rather narrow. In order to create a living and an open space, which was also strongly desired by the client, all the walls separating the […]
